VPN WAN disconnect restart tomato openvpn PIA

This question has probably already been asked before but I can't find an answer.

I have a VPN with Private Internet Access. I have an asus-RT-N16 with toastman's tomato. PIA provide instructions for using OpenVPN in tomato:
    https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/client-support/#tomato_openvpn

Using that configuration after a few minutes of not using the internet it stops working and I get no access. I read up and apparently the reason is that my ISP disconnects my WAN when not in use, the disconnect causes the VPN to stop working and it needs to restart.
    This is seriously annoying.

I noticed the "poll interval" and "connection retry" options and have tried a few different values but that didn't work. I guess I just don't know what I'm doing and would really appreciate help from a kind stranger. :)

Is this a common problem with OpenVPN? How can I stop the disconnecting? Should I try PPTP instead?
I suppose I could write a small script to ping google every five minutes, last resort though.
    Attached are my VPN settings:
