After months of complaining to the US and UK support teams they have at last given me a copy of 1.03 (Beta 4) for the 54G v1.2 (UK) and it works. I have at last got SNMP stats on the ADSL interface that work and the unit seems stable, still got some testing on the wireless to complete.

This shows that a good moan and formal esculation to Cisco will get what you want.

Wireless seems to be more stable, I'll post the code tomorrow!!!!

Well here it is, I've been running with the code for about 48hours and it seems stable. SNMP works for both incoming and outgoing stats on all interfaces, wireless works fine (getting 11Mb in areas where I only used to see 5Mb).

Well I tried to attached the file but got a message: Could not login to FTP Server. Send me a message via the message section with your email address and I'll forward the code on.

<wow>...I finally got it working... I have an EU v1.2... it took me 13 minutes to upgrade & i had to plug the phone cable cause the internet led turned red & the uploading process freezed for 12 minutes about 640 kB uploaded onto the router...now testing the wireless...
BTW I have put the router about 4 feets from my DWL-G520+ equiped PC... the signal is about 87-90% & when i'm going far from it (more the 15 feet i turn my notebook to 11b to give the wireless a signal power boost... & it works well...
the only shame is that the LAN speed lowers then from 1MB/s in the G mode to 0,2 MB/s in the B mode...
BTW what are your speeds when sending through wireless? I use the Total Commander to check it...
And the SNMP really WORKS now!

The access Log reports your Remote Administration & VPN connections...and do you use them?

  23. JollyTall

    JollyTall Network Guru Member

Was that for me? I don't use VPN or Remote Admin, but I remember hardware versions prior to 1.2.07 used to record details of web-sites visited and web-addresses sending unsolicited packets. This was the majority of the content when viewing All, and from memory I think they were listed under Admin Logs. But they are definately not there for me now under any of the options. How about you?

I have found with both the 1.2.9 and 1.3.04 firmware that WLan access is very hit or miss.

Sometimes it will connect and get pages, other times the wlan connection is completely dead (ping tracert etc). If you click disconnect to attempt to reconnect it quite often just freezes the router and you are forced to power cycle the router.

The only thing I have noticed which maybe related is that under Status > Gateway the Internet IP Address and Default Gateway and reported as the same address.

When I revert to 1.2.7 firmware the WLan connection works each time and the Gateway address is reported correctly under Status > Gateway.

I've tested quite a few modems/routers due to my job with a UK ISP and so far the WAG54G must rate as one of the worst, which is a shame as I had high hopes due to the WRT54G. I guess its down to the actual manufacture linksys purchase these units off, I just wish they would sort out a decent firmware with them.

thanks for your findings Cobain, it is a pity that some many of you WAG54G have the same problem yet Linksys will do absolutely nothing about this.

Upgraded firmware this morning (to 1.03 Beta 4), and this is the first continues 10 hours of Wireless access I have had since I made the mistake of buying it. Confidence is low... but here's hoping.

    DUDE, I LOVE YOU!

This one is great, I've had no disconnects (I got DHCP off, haven't tested with DHCP on) at all since I upgraded (about one hour ago). At the moment I'm downloading with like 800 KB/s with NO wireless disconnects at all, where it used to disconnect within like 5 minutes max.

I use the beta firmware now for 3 days and @ 11g (54mbps), but the wireless drops down when there is a lot of network communication :(.

Same experience as above, straight forward browsing from one client no problems (wireless link stays up ) as soon as you put load on the box the wireless drops, but at least it now seems to come back up after a period, without a trip up the stairs to re-boot..!

is the unit we ventilated? some people have found adding a fan on top of the unit makes it work better due to them thinking the unit is over heating under load.

Not ventilated, but sitting on its side (after advice from this forum), I'll get a couple of fans, to cool us both down. Thanks

    WAG54G firmware/connection problem

I originally had the WAG54G v1, returned it due to connection dropping and got a new one - v1.2. This too had problems with wireless connection. Tried all sorts of configs. Found this forum and tried the new beta version of firmware 1.03.0 beta 4. It started to update, then I got dns error webpage and power light was continuously flashing. I powered off/on router. Still said 1.02.1 firmware!! Tried to update to 1.02.7 same thing happened!! It seems I can't now change my firmware....any ideas anyone?
I have changed wireless channel from 11 to 1, things seem to be OK so far.
    Thanks

    Wireless Power...

Is there a way in this firmware to manually set the Wireless Signal to the maximum????
I think it's the main cause of wireless drops... In G mode i get 87 % of power & quality & it makes the WLAN quite stable while in the B mode its hundred times more stable even if i go far from the router... The power is then 3 times higher than in G mode...
    BTW
What are your average transfer speeds on WLAN mijne are 1 MB/s in G mode & 0,2 MB/s in B mode...

Its OK, I now have 1.03.0 beta 4 running (update successful).

Not good though, I'm still getting the same wireless connection drops. Connection OK for a while, then drops. Happens particularly when second wireless PC turned on (knocks out all wireless clients), but wired PC still connects to the internet. (3 in total)

I reckon we need to exchange for V2 WAG54G. I have V1.2. Failing that, switch to another manufacturer.

    Anyone....help!!

Cobain, I've exactly the same problem. The gateway is the same as the IP. I cannot surf. So I go back to the firmware 1.01.7.
Note that I have connection drop with an Intel 2200BG integrated in
the laptop in 54mb, but not with the Linksys pcmcia card.
I ve no connection drop with the Intel 2200BG in the 11Mb mode.

    WAG54G and Latest Beta Firmware

    All

Having same ongoing problems with my WAG54G, wireless drops especially on large file transfer.

Flashed the new firmware, much better. Managed to transfer 4Gb Wireless to hard conection but it still fails wireless to wireless although it is improved in that I have managed to transfer a 500mb file but only once.

Out of desperation I have disabled to Wireless function of the WAG54g and purchased a WAP54g for about £30. Plugged to WAP54G into the WAG54g and routed all wireless traffic via the new Wireless access point, BINGO no lockouts, connection to the internet very stable. Just testing wireless to wireless, so far 4Gb copied with no problems.

Solved the problem.....took the WAG54G back to retailer, got a full refund and bought a Netgear DG834GT.
Not one single problem to report, connection good, all clients working, can't fault it!
It also has 108Mbps wireless LAN!

    back to 1.02.09

    Hi.

after 3 days runnig 1.03.04, I experienced old and new pbs :
    - OLD : laptop wouldn't reconnect on wireless unless I hook it back on ethernet. (WPC54G)
    - NEW : gateway froze twice. To get it back working, I had to reboot it and connect the laptop with a static IP.

I'll wait for the next beta version...

Does this mean that 1.02.7 does not support SNMP protocol? And 1.03.0 Beta 4 does? Why do you know about that?

    thx rila

Well...here a sign of life from Holland

I am using rel. 1.03.0 Beta_4 for a few days now and turned the Beacon back to 50ms and the fragmentation and RTS treshold to 2304 all seems to work well. (these are values I found on theAustralian whirlpool forum and was given by the Australian linksys helpdesk)

My daughter did not complain for two days now (since the installation) of disconnections from the wireless AP....so this works fine.

I even measured a stable connection on the second floor at 34Mbs and 40% signal strength and quality.....so this looks good to me..
Please be aware that there is rather some concrete ni between the WAG54G and the laptop with wireless linksys PCI card on the second floor.

Can somebody tell me what the WDS option is in the wireless settings?

It is a new feature, but I could not find a description.

    By the way:
    - I am using windows XP
    - turned off: use windows to configure my wireless network settings
    - turned off: Enable network control using IEEE 802.1X

So, windows does not control anything

    Hi,
WDS means Wireless Distribution System and is to bridge the signal with an other AP !
It doesn't work with this firmware but works fine with 1.02.7 !

Juts installed it on a 1.0 router and so far it seems to work.

I'm using it with DHCP, mixed wireless and copper, WPA PSK, 1 Dell 9100 portable with internal wlan adapter 2 workstations with wmp54g wireless adapters and an xbox (AnnexA, connectivity provider is NGI, an Italian internet provider).

As many of you I had tons of problems in the past with the router and only lately the situation was a bit better with the v1.02.9_04 version, but I still suffered from randon disconnections and problems transferring big files.

The router is not cooled by fans or anything.

Will report back in a week or so.

    Cheers,
    Cico.

    i have a wag54g 1.2
i think it is the EU-Version, i have buy in german.

does the annexA works, or i need the annexB firmware ?

if i need B, where can i get it ?

have somebody problems with intel 2200bg (centrino onboard wlan) with this beta firmware ?
does wpa psk works without problems ?

Edit: i have tried it. but there comes an error message (pattern error)
is this because i have annexb ? how can i install this firmware ? i know that enough people runs on an annexB a annexA firm without problems.
is there another way to flash the firm ?

    Edit2:
now i have tried with tftp: invalid image. but i dont know why.
    i have the WAG54G_AnnexA_ETSI_v1.03.0_beta4_00_code.bin
already i have downloadet it a few times, but always the same.

    WAG54G wireless internet connection drops

Today I got fed up of the disconnected wireless I-net connection.
It used to uccur once in a while but now several times a day.
I upgraded to WAG54G_AnnexA_ETSI_v1.02.7_03. It was quickly and painless.
Accept that I am now not able to connect to the WAG wireless, the Internet connection still works.
Let's see what happens the coming days

    For wireless stability :
    1) Don't use Auto TX rate ( set it to 54 Meg)
    2) Don't use WPA, the WAG is much more stable using WEP or no encryption
    3) Try to avoid low recepption level by placing the WAg at an optimal place inside your house

Thanks for the tip Booly, i'll try the Auto TX I use already WEP.

Tried the WAG54G_AnnexA_ETSI_v1.02.7_03 version for 5 days now and it is working great. Only 1 drop but it reconnected automatically.

But it seems that now I cannot connect to the WAG54G with my wireless laptop.

I just posted the reply and changed the Tx setting into 54.
From that point I could not make any wireless connection at all !!
I just set it back to Auto, that worked fine.

Going downstairs now to see if it works.

Sinds today the wireless connection of my WAG54G disconnects again. Only a reboot helps to restore it.
Now I upgraded the firmware to version 1.03 beta 4 see what heppens.
The first result is that the connection speed dropped from 54Mbps to 24 Mbps. Well if the Wireless internet connection keeps working thats fine with me.

I guess that the temperature of the WAG54G also has got to do with it. So I'm going to put a litte fan on top of it. see what happens.
If the wireless connection stays I'll downgrade the firmware to getmy 54Mbps back.

Today the switchports of my WAG54G does not function anymore!!
But the wireless part is stil working.
Unfortunately I need the copper for my PC's so This WAG is gone. But I have another one and configured is with its original firmware 1.01.6 If this one gets the same wireless droppings I'll shoot it and by a Belkin. No Linksys for me anymore !!

How old is your modem? Was ADSL2+ invented then?

HiSpeed has both this and a later 1.03.1 beta on his great French language (free registration required) site
    http://jelnet.free.fr/forum/viewtopic.php?t=93

Note that failing switch ports in these routers often caused by failing electrolytic capacitors around the switch chip.
