What version firmware are you using? I have just looked in the GPL sourcecode for v1.01.03 and it does not seem to contain the utelnetd telnet server program - which means snmp may be your only route left.
  6. michelinok

    michelinok Network Guru Member

The problem is that i cannot telnet successfully into the router, telnet goes timeout :(

I've the latest fw, i'll revert to an older one as soon as I can.

Trouble is you probably want to use the latest Broadcom DSL drivers which will only be in the latest version... I've used a free version of "The Dude" snmp program before.

It seems that Linksys has disabled the "debug" feature in the latest firmware.
When you try to set the debug mode, even though the router shows "Debug Enable!" you cannot telnet to it. Therefore not even dmt works. Could it be that Linksys changed the default telnet port? Any ideas?

BI on the Aus whirlpool forums has just pointed out a hidden page in the WAG325N GUI. A quick look at the WAG54GS sourcecode suggests it also has this - so this may the answer to the OP's request:-

It works, but it doesn't give any useful info not available through the menus :-(

    Hello guys.

I was need telnet for my router too, with new firmware of course :halo:
and so i compiled last firmware with telnet enabled

here is a screenshots of web interface and console, with versions, and firmware itself

you can flash it or not, i give no warranty, and i'm not responsible if something goes wrong and if you'll brick your router :halo:

i've tried flashing it through serial port (with TFTP on host) and through web interface, both went well, so i'm here to share it with you

version is 1.01.03 for annex a

hi,egoisto,,,,I tried your firmware it works well but it has a problem with connecting to dyndns.org as i do not get a status on the ddns tab and it does not connect when asked to.. but the software works well with DMTv8.07. so thanks ...

I've tried your firmware and it works great. The only issue I found is that even when you disable firewall, IPTABLES FORWARD policy is set up to DROP. In my case I want to route everything from the Internet to my server (without NAT!). So every time I want to get it to work I have to log to the router and manually change FORWARD policy to IPTABLES -P FORWARD ACCEPT. You can imagine how annoying it is when you have to do it every time your router reboots.

I think this problem is not your firmware specific, but generally LINKSYS firewall settings scripts is a bit broken. Would you be possible to recompile the firmware for me and change line 54 of /usr/sbin/fw-scripts/firewall script from $IPTABLES -P FORWARD DROP to $IPTABLES -P FORWARD ACCEPT.

You would save my life that way!

If not can you post some hints how to recompile the firmware yourself?

    Thanks for help!

Hello egoisto he installed your firmware and Telnet works, but updating Dyndns not working. You could fix that?.

    Hello egoisto
Installed your WAG54GS firmware, router accepted it and runs ok.
But I still can't telnet to the routers IP address says Could not open connection to host on port 23.
Bought this router so I could use DMT tools, the WAG54GS syncs a bit faster than the Draytek it replaces, but I can't use the tool, frustrating, am I missing something?
Googled and it seems I'm not the only person with this problem.
    Any help would be appreciated.

In other way, how can access with telnet to the router ?

Someone said it worked, someone said that didn't work.

I installed the mod firmware - flash OK.
I tried to login with dos telnet but it's impossble to communicate with router (for telnet).

Should I setup something in the router? DOS telnet is ok ?

Hello again =) I was too far away last time, so were no answers from me.

bovirus and A_to_zee, you should run telnet first. Like this: _http://your.router.ip.here/setup.cgi?todo=debug

queen13, if you still need it, I can make a little how to compiling firmware maybe =)

    bovirus LI Guru Member

As i explained before teh standard fw (and GPL) v .101.03 has definitely remove the telnet option (to security reason)

If you compiled the 1.01.03 without changes the telnet cannot be activate with debug link.
  22. bovirus

    bovirus LI Guru Member

As you confirmed the situation is:

The Linksys std firmware (1.01.03) cannot enable telnet anyway

You Mod fw (1.01.03) has the option to enable the telnet but AFTER enable it with debug link.
  23. bovirus

    bovirus LI Guru Member

I tested your mod fw but also enabling with debug link, if i run a DOS telnet connection (TELNEt it's impossible to connect in telnet.

There is no difference bw original Linksys 1.01.03 and your mod 1.01.03 (by telnet access)
  24. egoisto

    egoisto LI Guru Member

I must not prove anything, older posts confirm that it works, and I'm using telnet sometimes too. Check your conditions.

  25. bovirus

    bovirus LI Guru Member

I redownloaded the firmware by link in post 14.

    I flashed it into WAG54GS.

I enabled telnet with debug link (answer debug enabled)

By serial console I checked that in process list (ps comnand) is not available

    /usr/sbin/utelnetd -d

For this reason the dos command telnet (telnet doesn't work (answer: impossible to contact it on port 23)
  26. egoisto

    egoisto LI Guru Member

do "cat /etc/version" and "cat /proc/version" and post what it shows.
  27. bovirus

    bovirus LI Guru Member

The answer to cat 7etc/version reported 1.01.03 mod by egoisto

    I found the problem.

After flashing the modem, at first reboot, after type the debug link I can access to telnet (dos telnet

But after this first reboot (just after flashing), any following poweron the modem I cannot access to telnet (of course after typing debug link and received "Debug enabled")

First boot (after flash) - Telnet OK
Any following boot - Telnet KO
  28. egoisto

    egoisto LI Guru Member

ok, when you can not access telnet (after you enable debug), connect to modem by serial port and make "cat /proc/version" and "cat /etc/version" and post output here, there should not be any "by egoisto" text.

This sounds like you flashing or booting modem with firmware on tftp. And on another reboot it load old firmware. I'm sure asking you to check your conditions. You the only one who have this mystique problem.

Another way, when you can not access telnet (after you enable debug), connect to modem by serial port and make "utelnetd -d" there and then try telnet to modem.
  29. bovirus

    bovirus LI Guru Member

The modem firmware is loaded trough the web interface (not with tftp)

IT's impossbile to load a firmware and first reboot the modem works fine with telnet and other reboot the mdoem load old firmware (the flash doens't have enogh space to sttore both fw).

I cehcked withs erial console at firs reboot and other reboot the cat /etc/version reported alwyas mod egoisto.

Also the ps list process always doesn't show utelnetd (before and after type debug link)

    I will try as soon.

Today I'm using a firmware with utelnetd that is not include in GPL source) that is coming from DG834 Braodcom GPL.

With this fw (mod by MisteroX) the telnet is active by default.
  30. egoisto

    egoisto LI Guru Member

Well if you have another working firmware with telnet, just use it. You do not need to use mine mod if it's not working for you.
  31. bovirus

    bovirus LI Guru Member

    I'm so sorry for misunderstanding.

My explanation is regard the hardware that works fine with other firmwares.

It means that the problem reported are in the firmware.

I tested three times and I can confirm.

First boot after flash - telnet OK

Other boots telnet are not ok.
  32. egoisto

    egoisto LI Guru Member

np, I just don't get what's wrong. I myself using this mod, and using telnet sometimes too =)
When you can not enable telnet by web interface, could you connect by serial port and run it by hand and then telnet from dos? "utelnet -d" maybe there is some error.
Oh and can you calc md5 hash of firmware you downloaded and of zip file, I can compare with my original then.
