Want to run 2 routers at once

Forgive my ignorance, that's why I joined!
    I have a WRT54G ver. 1.1 series CDF20 running SveaSoft Satori 4.0 v2.07.1.7sv. It works great thanks to Linksysinfo.org & SveaSoft.
I have another still in the box indicating WRT54G v2-PKG-40618H & series CDF70. I was going to keep it around as a stand-by, but a computer friend suggested that I might be able to use it to extend my range.
I'd like some pointers as to how to do this & which firmware on the new router would be best suited for this application. So far, Alchemy & WRT are two that I have found that may work on the ver 2 model. I'm sure I'm not the first to try this.
(Gosh, I wish I understood Linux)
    Thanks for the replies...

dd-wrt has a bridge mode which you can set to p2multip or repeater mode.
which will extend the range quite nicely.

buy the upgraded antennae and it will be even better.
