I have a WAP54G and the stock firmware does not allow using the device as a Client or repeater with other manufactures AP's. You have to use Linksys.

Will Tomato and/or WRT-DD allow this?

    WAP or WAG?

neither acts like a client of anything with Linksys firmware.

WAG can't load DD-WRT or Tomato

DD-WRT and Tomato will connect to any brand of AP if configured as a client.

It should of been 'P'. Damn model numbers.
With the stock Linksys firmware, I am able to connect to my Westell 327W Versa Link DSL modem/router. According to the manual, Linksys claims in AP Client mode, the unit only works with other Linksys products.

I started to look into the WRT-DD firmware and they claim you can load their firmware through a more detailed process to this WAP54G.

I have actually had some luck using my WAP54G v2 as an AP client with an SMC wireless router. All I did was input the wireless MAC address of the SMC into the box under Setup>Network Setup>AP Client. Worked flawlessly.

The Linksys info is wrong, as you need to use the WLAN MAC address, not the LAN MAC address, for it to work. You could also use the Site Survey option to add it.

I don't know if this works with all other manufacturers, but it doesn't have to be Linksys.

If it refuses to work, than try DD-WRT. It is the only 3rd party firmware I know of for the WAP54G.

I plan on trying to use WRT-DD, but after reading through much of the available info, I'm concerned about doing a bad flash since this is more sensitive to foreign firmware.

9 of my 17 routers have DD-WRT and are running fine.
5 of my 17 routers have freifunk and are running fine.

the three bricks have Sveasoft, PacketProtector and TinyPeap

Go to the DD-WRT forum. read the announcements, do the 30-30-30, follow the instructions.
