WAP54G repeating a 3Com box using WDS - Works...!

    Hi All,

I have a 3Com OfficeConnect ADSL Wireless 11g Firewall Router. One of these in fact. I have just got my WAP54G to repeat the 3Com using WDS and it's working just great.

My 3Com is running some beta firmware I'm testing for 3Com, but that should go gold soon. The WAP54G is a v2 model I believe (only 3 LED's on the front) and is running HyperWAP based on 2.07 Linksys F/W.

The 3Com's WDS config is activated with the MAC of the WAP54G in there. The WAP54G is set to repeater mode with the MAC of the 3Com. I'm running a stock config on the WAP54G other than that, with 128bit WEP and a slight hike in Tx power thanks to HyperWAP.

So, cross vendor WDS IS possible...!

    Cheers,

    Max

    Re: great more datails?

    Hi Perception,

Sorry, I haven't been on linksysinfo for a while so didn't see your post. I am running a beta firmware on my 3Com box. Unfortunately, my deal with 3Com means I can't pass it on anywhere, but they assure me that it will be going gold in the near future.

On the WAP-54G, I did the following :

    - Installed HyperWAP 2.07, but the latest Linksys 2.08 is probably better. I only put this on to get the power output control.
    - Gave the unit a fixed IP that was outside the range of the 3Com's DHCP pool. In my case 192.168.0.2 - 100, so the WAP-54G became 192.168.0.101. This si so I can still log into the WAP-54G to mod the power easily.
    - Switched the unit to the same channel as the 3Com box, gave it the same SSID and enabled the same WEP key.
    - Switched the AP mode to Repeater and entered the MAC of the 3Com box. It says it only works with WRT-54G and WAP-54G, but it does OK with the 3Com too.

Then time to set up the 3Com.

Essentially within the 3Com config, you go to the WDS menu which is situated under Wireless (not sure if this is only on my beta / new firmware or on the current gold as well) and enable WDS. In there you can add repeaters by entering their MAC. Enable and then apply and hey presto it works...!

The only problem I have had is that my clients sometimes renew their IP's at seemingly random intervals, other than that, it's perfect.

    Hope this helps,

    Max

Just a quick note to add : My beta firmware has now gone gold and you can download it from 3Com.
