WARNING! Don't try a WRE54G V1.0 with a WRT54GSV4.0

Having just spent about 5 hours trying to get a perfectly good WRE54G to connect with my new WRT54GS and failing miserably, I checked with Linksys support. They did the usual thing of suggesting different firmware versions before finally saying that the WRE54G does bridge to earlier WRT54GS products but not to the V4 hardware version - even with the latest firmware.

My WRE54G had previously worked very well with a WRT54G (which broke on me).

It would be great if someone could contradict this and let me know how to do it.

While running the included Linksys firmware, reset the router to factory defaults using the menu option, not the reset button.

Load dd-wrt v23 generic (micro or basic). I have heard that Micro is best, but basic is the one I used. I guess it doesn't matter which.

Immediately after that load Thibor's HyperWRT

This will now be running the latest enhanced Linksys code for a V3 GS.

Only after successfully running Thibor's HyperWRT should you perform any sort of reset. Once it is running Thibor's HyperWRT, you may make it run better by giving it a long hardware reset with the reset button. This will "lock in" the firmware and cause it to run a bit better.

That's what to do with a V4 router. Thibor's HyperWRT has every sort of security and connectivity option, as well as nicely enhanced range--all very easy to use.

The range extension unit could be swapped for a WAP instead (repeater mode).

Should you have a "mishap" with the firmware on a V4 router, then just treat it like a bricked router. Load on the Micro generic version of dd-wrt V23 as a starting place when trying to get one of these "unstuck". It won't get stuck unless you play with the firmware a lot.

I beg you please help me cause I am confused.

1.How many WRE54G vesions there are and from where I can understand(before I buy) which version it is?
2.I have WRT54GS v4,will it be compatible?I mean I see that it has only G not GS.If I enable the speedbooster at the router and at the pci cards will it work the WRE with the speedbooster speed?
3.How close do I have to put WRE54G to the router?Linksys says "put it within range of your main access point or wireless router"
4.My problem is that the computer that dont have the router has got poor signal, it is 15 meters away at the living room and it has between the 2 computers walls. Will this device help so the signal goes stronger?

P.S.I cant understand what is going on?I took and the router and the signal is still very poor to the other pc.Many guys told me that it should have better signal cause the distance isnt so far.

    Thanx in advance!Please help me!
