WDS, 2nd router can't ping. Normal?

I set up two routers, one WRT54GSv4 and the other WRT54GSv1, Both with Tomato configured exactly as in the FAQs.

While checking the log, on 2nd router, I noticed the time didn't update, further playing showed it can't ping any address.
The 1st router has correct time and can ping.

    Is this normal?

If the first router is supplying internet service to the network, put the LAN IP of the first router into the WDS radio Gateway and DNS fields. Be sure both radios are in the same subnet with no duplicate addresses.

Thanks. I guess I missed that in the instructions ):

Why does the second router need to know what time it is ? It does no routing and is passively relaying traffic, so there are no statistics. Isn't this kinda like the cat5 patch cable needing to have a clock ?

Probably, but I did miss where the FAQs said:
    Must be something to it(?).
