WDS Clarification

I recently bought a WAP54G because of the ability to place this device into a repeater mode. Unlike WDS with a WRT54G, the repeater mode in the WAP54G will allow you to type in a remote MAC and it will start repeating. No other configuration is needed on the other AP to get this working.

My end goal and reason for buying the WAP54G was to have the ability to extend open wireless networks in my neighborhood. My wireless PCMCIA card has a fairly limited range and I can only get connected to a remote AP by getting very close to a window or sit in my front lawn. This is not the most comfortable way to mooch off my neighbor. To get around surfing for porn in in front lawn, I put my WAP54G in repeater mode and typed in the MAC address of my neighbors AP. Then I placed the AP near the window and now I can sit anywhere in my house and bounce the signal off my AP to my neighbors AP and out the Internet.

My question is, can I do this with the WRT54G and the Alchemy firmware using WDS? It my understanding that WDS requires BOTH sides to be set up with the other router's MAC. I don't have access to their AP, nor want to bug my neighbor about this. Before I drop a few bucks on the WRT54G, can I use it to extend my neighbors signal as long as it's an unsecured network?
