WDS only option?

    Ok so I went out and got myself another WRT54G to act as an AP to extend my wireless coverage to the upstairs part of the house. After a couple of hours of fiddling with all the settings and finally getting it to work I've got some good coverage throughout the house. Now, I know that using WDS cuts your bandwidth in half so I was wondering if there is any other option available to me for what I want to do. This is my setup:

    Cable Modem--------WRT54G+++++WRT54G+++++Wireless Laptop (802.11b)

    ----- = wire
    +++ = wireless

    I basically need to provide connectivity for that wireless laptop and directly connecting it to the second WRT54G is not an option. The laptop will always use the second WRT54G as it's primary AP btw.

    Thanks for any tips.

    I think WDS is the only possibility here seeing that you need wireless access to the second AP.

    Damn, was afraid of that. I guess I'll have to shell out some bucks and get an 802.11g card for the laptop then. At least that will boost up the speed for some LAN transfers.

    Thanks.

    the higher the Mbps the lower the signal will be i have 3 WRT54G's and i get a 1 mile covrage with them at 5.5Mbps not that bad the worst signal i get is a 55 on signal and 86 on quality but i use WDS and every thing works out fine here :)

    well its like setting up 3 routers if you can set 3 of them up in WDS yu can sue up a 100 of them but be advised every hop you make you cut your bandwidth in half that why im about to change to something better and go bridge mode since the WRT54G sucks ass in bridge mode only allowing 1 MAC id to connect to it lol

    if you need any more help just pm me and ill see what i can do for you

    I just installed the Sveasoft firmware on my WRT54G v2.0 and I can't seem to set it up in WDS with my other linksys router. Can someone show me their configuration or point me to one. Thank you.

    well if both routers have the wds option ive noticed that they both need it enabled and each one needs the others mac address but i have found it that routers that dont have the wds option work just fine this is what i do to kill wds hops i set one router lets say hyperwrt the next one satori (the free version) and the next hyperwrt notice there is basicly only 1 hop with wds meaning you have only lost 50% of your bandwidth with 3 routers so what you do is set your first router up with hyperwrt set every thing up dont bother lookin for wds cause it aint there and on the second router install satori enable wds and put in the mac id of the first router and it should work just fine it does for me and on the third dont bother with a wds firmware just enter the mac address of the third router in the second router's wds settings and it will work i would send my configs but i cant mask my mac addy's and i dont want them on the net or any thing for security reason and for my customers privacy sorry :(

    Hi Lobo,

    With the prerequisite you laid out I would recommend that you took a closer look at this product; www.netgear.com/products/details/WGXB102.php

    I´m a happy camper with 2 Airport Express (AX) hooked up in WDS mode with WPA security listening to my favourite Internet radio station through one of the AX (thanks to the program "Airfoil" from www.rogueamoeba.com) in the living-room and the printer hooked up with the other AX in the closet together with the cable modem. Like everything else with Apple it was so easy it took some of the satisfaction away. You know the kind when you look back at your work at three a clock in the morning with a big smile on your face and a deep sigh of accomplishment. "I finally did it". Apple unfortunately deprives you from that feeling.

    Check out the "Airfoil" faq; www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/faq.php

    My WRT54GS is boxed up for now.

    Good luck,

    E-razor
