WDS wireless clients can't see each other

I have the problem that wireless clients on my WDS setup can't see each other. Internet works fine on all my devices but they can't ping each other as long as they're wireless. Example: can't ping my wireless computer from my phone or phone from wireless computer. But when i plug an ethernet cable into my computer i can suddenly ping my phone and vice verca. My routers are three WRT54GL v1.1.

The same problem has been reported at the DD-WRT forum (link) but no solution. Seems i'll be switching to another firmware.

(Side question: why isn't there a subforum for Openwrt? Tomato and DD-WRT haven't had a release in ages while the last version of Openwrt was released earlier this year.)

    OpenWRT has its own forum.

There is ongoing development in Tomato.

dd-wrt is constantly releasing new versions.

A major problem in relying on WDS is that it's not a wifi standard. Therefore, all implementations are proprietary, and as such incompatibilities are VERY common. You not only need the same firmware, but often the same hardware (make & model). Anyone relying on WDS under any other circumstances is rolling the dice.
