Hi, this is my first time on linksysinfo.org! :)

I am trying to set up WDS to get signal to a hard-to-reach area in my house. I am using this guide from the DD-WRT wiki http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php?title=WDS_Linked_router_network but there is on problem: I only have one Linksys router. The other one is a Motorola SBG900 (modem and wireless all-in-one). Can that be done, or does it have to be a Linksys?

    Also:

    1. What routers are compatible with this?

    2. Will a WRT54G v5 work (i know it kinda sucks, but its cheaper than a linksys wireless range expander)

you would need to use 3rd party firmware on your Linksys router to get this to work. i'm partial to HyperWRT, but that won't work on a v5 or higher router. you'd need a v4 or lower or a WRT54GL.

if you go the HyperWRT route, then you would set up your router in WET mode. that basically sets it up as a wireless client with 4 ethernet ports you can connect devices to.

actually i think the Motorola SBG900 does support WDS so all you need is a compatible firmware for the linksys. its kinda like being a kid in a candy store, you want em all but can only have 1

I can't remember but I've setup a WDS a while back with a Linksys WRT54G and Motorola wr850gp. As for buy another router, I recommend reading the dd-wrt wiki for supporting devices and go with buffalo whr-g54s or any other without the v5, v6 or v7 RAM constraint
