weird wds problem

I have two WRT54GS, both running v23, one is the 111005-mini, the other is a two or three weeks old -std (can't tell the exact date right now - it has been running well for me so far). The -std one is running as my AP, it has one client (a WRT54G) and a WAN connection to the internet.

I want the other GS to work with this one using WDS. WAN interface is disabled. I set things up on both sides, they each see the other as connected using WDS in the status page, but one says "rssi 30", the other says "rssi 0". And I can't ping from one to the other.

This is using WEP, I checked the keys. I made sure the MAC addresses in the WDS section are correct.

Weird... any idea what I'm missing? If I need to provide more details, what would help?
