Weird WRT54GS Issues

Okay. I have a WRT54GS v1.1 router hooked up to my computer, but it is giving me some strange problems.

First of all, I use the network for my wireless internet, and in the past it has always been pretty clear cut indications on whether its connected or not. Recently, I've started getting a "Not Connected" next to my linksys network, but my internet works just fine. On top of this, it just will not actually move on to "Connected" no matter what I try. Does anybody have any idea what is causing this?

Also, my wireless connection is eratic at best. It will stay connected anywhere between 30 seconds to 20 minutes and then suddenly disconnect without any outside source acting upon it. It doesn't matter whether I am on the internet or not, it just does it at irregular intervals. I think that it must have something to do with the signal strength, but Im not experienced enough to make any concrete decision that might put me in an even worse posistion afterwards.

What operating system are you using on your computer?

I have had problems with my laptop running Windoze XP and it will show a red x on the network icon in the task bar, but the connection works fine.
