    Hi, everyone.

My name is Santiago, it's my first post here. I'm a newbye in wireless, but after posting this message I've been reading a lot, and I've learnt a lot of stuff about wireless.

At home I was planning to by a Linksys WRT54GS and a Linksys PCMCIA with Speedbooster for my brothers notebook. The reason to choose this pair of components it's that my brother needs a wireless connection as fast as possible with the LAN network that I've got at home.

After reading I found that the most convenient router is the WRT54GS v4 because the firmware could be flashed with a 3rd party firmware that offers some features that the Linksys firmware doesn't offer. The problem I've got is that here in Argentina all the WRT54GS that I've found there are v5. So... what can I do know?

Is it a better choice to buy a WRT54GL with a Linksys PCMCIA without SpeedBooster?? (Although it will be slower than with SpeedBooster but the firmware could be flashed with a 3rd party firmware that offers better features than the WRT54GS v5)

Well, I hope someone there could help me to decide to choose the better option.

    Regards from Argentina.

You might want to check out eBay. OTOH, if you don't need to run any third party firmware, you can get a US Robotics 5461 USB Printer Server/Router for less than US$60. This is a 125Mbps Max router.

Thanks mazillo but that's not an option because the shipments to Argentina are expensive from USA, Canada or Europe and also because the Argentinian custom charges a lot of fees when a person do an import for personal use.

US Robotics doesn't have good representation here in Argentina, so there are very hard to find and very expensive when they could be found.

I'm thinking in resigning speed, because I see that the features that 3rd party firmwares offer are very attractive, but I'm not 100% sure about doing that because perhaps the WRT54GS v5 with the VxWorks offers same kind of features.

    Regards from Argentina

That's the huge problems with the S/H charges. I have some friends who frequently buy products from eBay as well as other places and have his products sent to one of the addresses in Miami, FL. Then, the compamy over there will forward the products to him for free. All he has to do is to pay the company a yearly contract of about $200 to cover all S/H costs from Miami, FL to his address in Latin America. Of course, he has to pay for the import custom tax when the products arrive at the airport in his country.

This may not be a good idea too with respect to warranty.

Whatever you do, please avoid any WRT54G/S newer than v5. Here are the reasons why you don't want to get the WRT54G v5 and WRT54GS v5.

Thanks to everyone for the advices.

    I'll go for the WRT54GL.

It's a pitty that Linksys doesn't release a GL with SpeedBooster.

I'll resign speed but I think that's a better choice than choose the GS with v5.

Thanks again to everyone that have helped me to clear my mind.

    Regards from Argentina.

WRT54GL + 3rd party firmware = speedbooster router. You can't go wrong with the GL.

How is it possible that WRT54GL + 3rd party firmware = speedbooster router??

The SpeedBooster isn't it a feature that comes in the chips of the GS routers that doesn't come in the chips of the G or GL routers???
