What Do You Use Your VPN For?

I see a lot of talk of VPN's here and the attempts to incorporate it into tomato. I have never set-up or used a VPN and I am wondering what sorts of interesting things can be done with it. I am just an average home user and don't really have a "business" or work reason to have a VPN.

So I am wondering, what benefits can a VPN provide to a home user? I hear that gamers use it for remote LAN's. Other than that I can't think of a good reason to set one up (I'm not saying there aren't any, I am just wondering).

For me, it allows secured access to my home network from a remote location (e.g. work, parents' house, etc).

VPN allows you to attach a computer (or computers) to a remote location as if it's part of the network. Instead of remote controlling such as remote desktop.

    same here :)
I bought a router for my parents which connect to mine with VPN.
Now I can admin their computers with VNC without opening ports on their routers, it's safer this way.

Ho, and I can also admin my rigs this way too ;)
I don't have a lot of ports opened on the router. If I want to download a file from my computer, I connect to the VPN then download through FTP (anonymous access with limited IP access to my sub-network).

The VPN is best part! I use mine all day long at work to pipe my firefly music server to my desktop.
