Whats the bottom line on the WRT54GS v5

I just got the WRT54GS V5. I live in single story town house so I generally get "VERY GOOD" signals everywhere and don't get connection drops at all. I bought the 2 7DBI antenna kit too.

DAMN the internet, ignorance is bliss. I ran across the 3rd party firmware info the other day and now I can't stop thinking that I'm not getting the most out of my WIFI router.

I found someone willing to trade their WRT54GS V1 with my V5.h me. It is clear that everyone says the V5 is no good.

    1. Out of all the WRT54GS V1 through V4, which is the best one to get? Should I trade for for the V1 or look online for a V2, V3, or V4?

    2. What firmware project is best suited for my needs? I am looking for:
    - increased power to the antennas

    - better speed (I don't have a speed booster WIFI mini card on my laptop)

    - better firewall, the stock firewall seems weak to me.

    - I want to be able to flash the firmware through the stock web page. Not that crazy hardware/ JTAG cable deal.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The bottom line is version 5 is crap!!! You don't need to trade it with a older version of G, just go buy a WRT54GL.

I thought the WRT54GL is obsolete? It doesn't have Speedbooster either or does that matter?

Speedbooster doesn't matter unless everything on your network has speedbooster. Also if you use 3rd party firmware like Thibor+Hyperwrt you will get access to speedbooster.

Is that the only difference between a WRT54GS and a WRT54GL?
