Which Router? Which firmware?

    Hi,

I am planning a wireless community network. I have all the wired side sorted so that I can safely allow my broadband to be used by both myself and the general public.

I now need a wireless gateway. I am particularly interested in Linksys equipment. I would like a linksys router that will transmit 802.11b WIFI and run NoCatAuth or NoCatSplash. I don't want to have to put in a seperate linux box with an AP - I want an all in one stick-it-on-the-roof job. I have plans for the antenna but I just need to know which of the Linksys routers to go for, what firmware to use and how to put the firmware on. I understand that the WRT54GL is popular, but I need to transmit in 'b' mode for better range. Will the 54G do this?

Any help would be much appreciated as I am very enthusiastic about getting this wireless gateway on the go.

    Thank you in advance,

    Marcus

personally, I like the WRTs right around version 2 and 2.2. They seem to be rather trouble free with loading and adjusing firmwares on. Plus, if u get a GS model, it MIGHT have the 32mb of ram instead of the normal 16mb. Of course, do not exceed version 4.0 for either the G or GS line. version 4 in both seem to have given me the most trouble in allowing firmwars to be loaded and changed.. ok, enough of my 2 cents...
