Why is this happening?

I'm totally perplexed...and being a newbie doesn't help. I have two linux boxes on the same subnet connected via a WRT54G router with the dd-wrt v22 final firmware.

When I ssh from linux1 to linux2 and do a 'who am i', it returns the ip of the router instead of the ip of linux1. It also happens when I do the reverse from linux2 to linux1.

I've tried a bunch of experiments to try to see what is influencing the behavior, and have had some promising results, but nothing conclusive.

Can anyone help me understand this mystery?

Someone at the dd-wrt forum posted the solution so I thought I would share it here...

Basically it was a setting in the router called local loopback. This setting causes the exact behavior I described above. Turning it off solved my problem.
