Heres an experience i had at a clients house, they were pre-sold a netgear Router ( WGU624) and NIC (WG311T). I installed and configured the router then installed then connected the desktop to the network. I couldnt belive the signal was so weak, the router was maybe 20 feet away! antenna was attached and all so i decided to fire up my laptop and see how that connected (has a broadcom chipset NIC) and a picture is worth a thousand words. The laptop was sitting on the desktop no more than 10" above the NIC. I eventually sold the client a linksys card but before installing that i tried the antenna because linksys comes with more powerful antenna by default, this added just one bar. When i installed the linksys card it received full bars. This is the 2nd time i had a problem with a Netgear card like this and i've also had 1 Dlink do the same so i figured i'd take a picture to share. ( i couldnt get this to upload the picture so heres a link)
