    Currently I am running tomato on a WRT54GL, using an am200 modem in bridge mode.

    I have been offered a netgear DG834PN router which has a built in modem, and I was wondering if there was any advantages in running the following combination..

    WRT54GL <---> DG834PN <---> ISP

    re security, efficiency etc? and what are the correct settings?

    TIA

    I haven't used the netgear router but in general, the simpler the setup the better. I'm using myself an ADSL modem as a bridge with Asus wl-500gP as router + AP.
    The modem could be used as a router and has filtering/fw/nat but it's just so much easier to configure it as a basic bridge (not to mention performance wise).
    In your case, see whether the modem is a better router then the linksys (I doubt it) and if it, you can take it, set it up as a router + modem and leave linksys as an AP.
    You can also take it if it's a better modem.
    However if you need to pay money and the current setup works fine I would leave things as they are. But that's just me.
