Wireless-G Network Slowdowns

I'm using a Linksys WRT54 (or maybe a WRT54GS, not sure) router with 4 computers and a range expander. Every afternoon, the Internet will slow down drastically and computers will get disconnected from the network. Also, the computer with the router has major problems uploading to a web server. This only happens in the afternoons.

Is this problem caused by a lot of people going on the Internet in my neighborhood or would installing some third party firmware help? If so, which would work best for this type of situation?

I know my question is nooby and understand if it's too bothersome to answer. Thanks!

    Clarification....

Your local network (wired/wireless) would not slow down, unless you are open for others to use your wireless network.

The WAN (internet) would depend on the contention ratio, if you have a standard dsl connection then you are looking at a 50:1 ration (business - 20:1). The connection would only slow down minimally if you have others on the same exchange using the bandwidth.

Perhaps you need to investigate this with your isp (provide pings/tracert's) give them "good and bad" results.

While you are waiting, perhaps try internal tests too.

Once you have pinned it down to internal or external you will then have an idea where to go next.

    cheers
