Wireless Newbie - WAG354G Signal variation

I've just taken advantage of the PC World Linksys WAG354G Router / WPC54G laptop card offer in the UK.

Having installed the kit, it's very noticeable that the wireless signal varies in strength the whole time, even when the laptop is next to the router.

I've tried changing channels and am currently using 9 to avoid 11, which is in use next door. 1 and 6 give a much reduced signal strength, so are no go.

Am I correct in assuming that this is one of the 'features' of wireless networking?

Or is there anything I can do about it?

Wireless signal strengh depend on the channel (you may have interference withe other device on some frequency ranges)

It's alos normal that you have small fluctuations ( 1 level "bar" ) while making some transfert.

The position of the router is important, moving the router in a other room or even few meter in th same room can greatly improve the coverage

Signal is varying by approx 10-15%, so I guess it's nothing to worry about.

    Thanks for your help.

I've just swapped a 3Com 54G card for the Linksys WPC54G v5 and whilst the signal with the 3Com was rock solid at 100% and 'Excellent', the Linksys fluctuates around ~90% and 'Very Good'.

No loss in performance as such but not terribly encouraging.

    Ah well.
