well just now i have a LINKSYS WRT54G. Its a version 7 router so i cant install 3rd party firmware on it. Its got a problem that sometimes the wireless network will work and sometimes it wont < really anoying.

i had an idea of buying a WRT54GL ( or the best for using 3rd party firmware )

Then i had the idea if i bought the new router would it be possable to maybe plug my current router downstairs or somewhere else in the house to increase the range of my network.

is this possable and how would i do it?

It sure would. Search for "repeater" on this site. That should get you started.
