wireless router drops wired connection

My brand new Linksys WRT54G v7 router was dropping the wired connection randomly several times a day. I would see the Network Cable Unplugged notification bubble in the Windows systray for a second and then all my messengers and p2p apps would go down for a moment before reconnecting. I took the router back to the store and got a new one. And it too drops the wired connection! How come!?

Edit: Just discovered it drops wireless too when it does.

Dude...I would check your cable connections...make sure they're clicking in and the pins are making good contact...I'd also look at your cables...carefully examine the connectors at both ends and make sure nothing looks wrong with them. Have you tried using a different CAT5 cable to see if that helps? Since you switched the router and you are still having the problem, I would cancel that out (unless you have a policy set in your Access Restrictions tab that is NOT 24hr Monday-Sunday connectivity). Look at your LAN card too in your PC. Make sure the CAT5 port looks OK and is not damaged or dirty. If you happen to have a spare NIC, I would try swapping the NIC to see if that's your culprit. Anyhow...I think trying a number of these suggestions should fix your problem. Good luck.

I had a hub before the router and one of my PCs was doing the routing. I had no problems then. Same cables. Same network cards.

As I was writing that paragraph, the router acted up again. This time no cable disconnect, but still all communication stopped. The router itself seemed okay - it's lights were blinking as if nothing had happened. I pinged the router from all computers and it timed out from all wired ones, but was reachable from the wireless computer. Half an hour later (now, that is) I power-cycled it and am now submitting this post.

Edit: (~10 minutes later) just got a cable disconnect.
