WPC54GS and HP laptop: hangs!

I've just brought a new Linksys WPC54GS and installed in my "old" HP nx9010 laptop, with Windows XP Pro (SP2). The adapter seems to work fine: it detects my network (WPA-PSK protected) and connects. When I start using the network (surfing, downloading files, transferring files from my desktop pc), after a random number of minutes (5-10...) Windows XP hangs: mouse stops, fans stops (if they were running) and the only solution is to power down my laptop.
I tested my adapter in a friend's laptop (Toshiba) and it works fine (with the same OS)... I tried my friend's network adapter (a DLink 650G) in my laptop and works fine... any idea about the reason why my laptop hates Linksys adapters?
