I have a customer with Verizon DSL using their Westell Versalink 327 combination DSL modem, 4 port router, wireless access point. One computer wired to the router works fine.

Second computer, Win XP Home SP2 with a Linksys WUSB card (not sure model). Setup 128 bit WEP on the Westell, entered the info in the Linksys Wireless Manager thingy and it would state the card was connected to access point but could not connect to internet. Disable WEP and it was fine. Re-enable WEP and it would not connect. Checked, double checked and triple checked WEP settings on both ends and still could not connect. Disabled LInksys Wireless Manager thingy and let Win XP handle it and it works fine!!

Today I am setting up an older laptop, Win 2000, 128 MB RAM with a Linksys WPC54GS card and encounter same problem. Linksys Wireless Manager thingy won't connect as long as WEP is enabled. It reports it connected to the access point, great signal strength and it just won't get an IP. Tried static IP and could not connect. Disable WEP, bingo it connects right away. I checked and rechecked the WEP settings and am convinced it is the Linksys Wireless manager thingy.

The question is, on a Win 2000 Pro laptop , is there anyway to conenct without the LInksys Wireless Manager thingy (TM)

    Thanks
    Pat

Thank you for contacting Linksys Technical Support.

If the computer is running Windows XP, you need not install the Linksys Wireless Configuration Utility for the wireless adapter because of the Wireless Zero Configuration Utility built-in on the operating system.

To configure your Wireless Adapter to connect to your Access Point using the Linksys WLAN utility (Recommended for 98/Me/2000)

    1. Click on Start then Programs, then click on anything that says something about the Linksys Wireless Adapter. On the menu, select either WLAN Utility or Wireless Configuration Utility

    2. On the lower right-hand side of your screen, double click on the Linksys Icon. This will bring up the WLAN Configuration Utility.

    3. Click on the Profiles Tab. Highlight Default then hit Edit. Select Expert Mode then Next. Click Security Settings to make sure that WEP is Disabled then click OK. Enter the SSID that is set on the router then hit Next.

    6. On Confirm New Settings click Yes. And then click “Activate New Settings Nowâ€

    7. Restart your PC.

    8. After the PC restarts, double click on the Linksys Icon on the lower right-hand side of your screen and see wether you have a green bar for LinkQuality and Signal Strength, if you do then you should now be able to connect to the router/internet
