WRE54G Average Speed?

I wanted to add the WRE54G to give my computer a stonger signal (thus higher data speeds). Unfortunatly when I added the extender my signal was stronger (went from low to excellent) but the data throughoutput was less. I went from a high of 6 Mbps to 1.5 Mbps. This was setup without encryption and with the latest firmware from Linksys on the extender and my router (WRT54GS). Has anyone else experience these problems? Has anyone found a solution?

I have retired my WRE54G and gotten a WRT54GX. The WRE54G worked okay and I am limited by my DSL connection to 3mbs/768kbs, so the WRE54G was not a factor in terms of speed, but I wanted to make my network less complex. The WRE54G defeats MAC address filtering, since it re-transmits the packets with its own MAC Address. That is another reason I retired it. The WRE54G will typically halve the bandwidth, since it must receive and resend the packets and it only has one radio.

I'm not too worried about security since the new WRE firmware has WPA encryption. I would love to switch to the GX line but $$$ is an issue. I just found it weird that the data throughoutput was less with a stronger signal.

You get a stronger signal, since the WRE54G is typically setup between the router and client. You get s stronger sigaial, since the WRE54G is closer to your wireless client. Each client cuts throughput aldso The WRE54G halves the throghput. I never measured the throughput with my WRE54G, since I was just happy to get connectivity to my printers. When I got my WRT54GX and WPC54GX, I measured the throrughput with IPERF and could get 43mbs on a transfer from a wired PC to a wireless PC. The best I got with my WRT54Gv1, with 5.5db antennas and HyperWRT with a boosted signal to a WMP54Gv2 was about 21mbs.
