WRT54G and Motorola SB6120

This may not have anything to do with the SB6120 cable modem, but I thought I'd include it in this question just in case.

My WRT54G router seems to continually send messages to the internet, as evidenced by the "Internet" indicator light flashing rapidly all the time. It's been doing it all along and I have mostly ignored it, but now that I've switched to a new modem, it has been brought to my attention by the very bright blinker on the modem which is rather irritating.

As an aside, the new modem is supposed to give me significantly higher speed but the increase is barely noticeable, if at all, in my browser. I though that maybe this continual transmission might be causing slower than expected speed.

Is this continuous Internet light flashing normal, and if not, what can I do to stop it?

BTW, the router (and modem) blinking goes on 24/7, even when I have turned off both of my computers.
