have you rebooted your cablemodem when you connected the router? have you setup your WAN type for DHCP on the router?

when you add a new network device against a cablemodem you have to reboot the cablemodem. this is due to the CM looking at the device's MAC address that is attached to it. it then issues one IP address. if you remove the network device from a CM and add a new mac address then the CM will not work. only a reboot or if you can clone the mac address of the working device onto the wrt54g then it may work.

    also reboot in thie order.

    1 CM
    2 Router
    3 any other PC's

you should then find it will get an IP. failing this either the cables are connected incorrectly or not working.
