WRT54G bricked for good? Erratic blinking.

    First: Hi Forum!

Second: Yes, I DID use the search function, but couldn't find any description of the behaviour my WRT54G shows.

    Third: My problem:

I have a WRT54G v1.1 that was bricked when power failed during a firmware upgrade. I have tried the linksys routine (no luck), I have tried shortening pin 15 & 16 (no luck) and in the end, I have connected pin 16 of the flash chip to ground. Result: The router responds to pings AND I can tftp the firware over. I used the linksys flash utility for that. However, the router doesn't boot up, it rather remains in a somehow irritating state of erratic blinking. It still responds to ping but response time vary wildly between 2ms and 350ms. To me, this looks almost like a bootloop, but correct me, if I'm wrong there.

Here's a video if the routers behaviour, if my decription was somewhat unclear:

After the tftp transfer is done, let the unit sit because it takes a while to flash the unit. it should reset itself once the update is complete.

If you unplug or reset the unit right after the transfer is done, the flash will be incomplete.

I have left it sitting there for about an hour after ftping the new firmware over and it's state doesn't change - the led is still blinking fast (but regularly this time). :(

what firmware are you using for tftp? try an earlier version of the linksys fw...like one of the 1.42.x series...

Then reset to defaults and try again.

    Having the exact same problem!

I have a WRT54G v1.1. The ping results come back with completely erratic times ranging from <1ms to <500ms. The power light constantly blinks. I appears that flashing routines completely successfully but the web administration page nevers come up. I have tried shorting pins 15-16 and then flashing with the same results (appears to flash ok but still doesn't work). I have tried a variety of frimwares from the current and older Linksys firmwares to Tomato to DD-WRT with no luck. Anyone have any ideas?

    Fixed it!!!

Hey The_Low, If you're still having the problem, I was able to fix mine. It was weird because it seem like the tftp of the firmware was completing successfully but I couldn't get the web interface to ever come up and the ping times were still erratic. What I notice after a while was that the Wireless light was solid. I thought I would give it a shot and I used my laptopr to search for wireless signals.

Crazy enough, it was there! I changed my IP, subnet and gateway for the wireless card (,, and connected to the wireless. When I typed into my browser, the web interface came right up. I then used the Firmware upgrade from the Administration tab and flashed it with the latest Linksys firmware (4.21.1 for my model). Make sure you wait for about 5 min before you click continue when it says it is successful. I clicked continue and then reset the router by holding the reset button for 30 sec. I then tried the web interface from my wired computer and it worked!!! It seems that only a part of the flash got screwed up and wasn't allowing the four ports to connect, but wireless worked just fine.

Hope this may be the same problem you are having. Good Luck!
