WRT54G & cable modem hassles

I bought a WRT54G about 4 weeks ago. CDF9... v 3.1 model. Using Windows 2000, Thomson TCM 425 cable modem, and made no modifications to 54G software. Seemed to work fine at first, later started having connection problems to internet. After some days, disconnected router & went back to my direct connection from PC to cable modem. The fun started.. Every time I started the computer and tried connecting to internet - would not go. I would have to do a cmd console - ipconfig /release - renew. Then it would connect. Spent the last 4 weeks resetting the modem, changing it from ethernet to USB, clearing Windows Routing table, reinstalling my ISPs software, changing settings, everything. Finally hauled my other computer in with W2000 on it - worked like a charm. Took the first computer, wiped my hardisk clean and reinstalled Windows 2000, it worked. Question - the WRT54G had to change something on my computer to mess it up - what DID it change??
