WRT54G captive portal?

Hi have been browsing this site for a few weeks now and had a few Qs. I am looking to install free wireless internet for my customers. I MIGHT charge later on down the line, but I highly doubt it. I plan to have around 5-10 people using it at the same time MAX. Now I will be using SBC DSL and wanted a captive portal page with a custom HTML page.

Would the WRT54G work well for this? Would I have to get new or custom firmware?

    TIA

And yes if I should get the linux download, which one? I know there are 2, but which would be best for me?

Well if you want to go the custom firmware route you have DD-WRT which includes ChilliSpot or Sveasoft's Beta Talisman Hotspot firmware that is not currently free to the public. (I don't know much about this Hotspot version of Talisman or even what the developement status of that firmware is currently...)

Or you have projects like PublicIP.net which don't require any custom firmware but do require an extra old PC but have a bit nicer interface & are more feature rich.

Also, here's a webpage with a really good list of available captive portal software. ;)

I like the simplicity of PublicIP but note that the website is about to go through a change as the author is adding a subscription service for to the project. (Everything that is currently available for free will remain free.)

Thanks you for your help. If I do download DD-WRT and use ChilliSpot will it act as a captive portal or will I have to set up a radius server or since the router will have ChilliSpot I won't have to do anything?

I was trying to go the cheapest and easiest route. I could use publicip but will cost more as I need a PC and will take up space. I just hope I can use the WRT54G with the DD-WRT software and be running. I mainly want a disclaimer page so if people perform illegal activities I am not held responsible for thier actions.

Also your link to list of captive portal software didn't work.

    Thank you once again.

    here is the link http://www.portless.net/menu/ewrt/
and yess for dd-wrt chillispot you will need a external server and a captvie portal. i think you should try e-wrt first. if you get e-wrt it working could you explain how. i have been working on getting this thing to work for months now.

Ahh thank you for your help, will try E-WRT. What problems are you having with it? Is it that hard if it is taking you serveral months to work on?

You will need to have a RADIUS server but the ChilliSpot project does provide a free RADIUS server account for hotspots with up to ten users. See here.

Ewrt may be better for your needs though. (Haven't tried it myself yet so I can't comment on configuration at this point.)

    Good luck.
