WRT54G causes problems to desktop pc

The desktop PC has both a dialup modem as well as a network card. The computer uses a dialup connection to connect to the internet. What we are trying to accomplish is just sharing files from the desktop to the laptop using a wireless connection. There is no need for sharing the internet connection. When the desktop is connected to the router with a network cable, the desktop lags horribly. Move the mouse, wait, then the cursor moves. When the network cable is disconnected, it's fine. Haven't gotten past this point, didn't even try to get the laptop to connect to the router. Anyone have an idea why it would do this? Thanks for the help!
