WRT54G DD-WRT v23 final with Netdisk

I have a netdisk plugged into an ethernet port of WRT54G with DD-WRT firmware v 23 final. It is connected by WDS to another router WRT54GS also with DD-WRT v 23 final. I get horrible speed copying files from PC to netdisk, about 0.6 MB/s. The netdisk admin tool on Windows XP gives message from time to time that connection is lost. It does not matter whether I plug the netdisk in WRT54G which has the PC on another ethernet port, or in WRT54GS, which is in another room and wireless WDS AP.

Right now I have QoS disbled in both the routers. Since the issue of loosing connection appears even when the netdisk is connected directly to WRT54G where the PC is also connected, the wireless connection and WDS is probably not the issue.

My question here is, will enabling QoS to the port where netdisk is plugged in help? I appreciate if anyone has a netdisk/WRT54G combination giving similar problem of loosing connection intermittently and getting horribly slow copy speed.

Netdisk is using LPX protocol, not TCPIP. I know something is wrong, because when I see the copy progress, the netdisk will copy some data, then no activity, then copy again, and so on. One surprising thing is that although it seems to loose connection and then somehow reestablishes it, the copy speed of 0.6 MB/s is reproducible and consitent for many write tests.

Thanks for any help. I am not sure whether this is a router and QoS issue?
