I am n00b to the WLAN and WRT54G, have few questions:
    1) Is the WRT54G built-in firewall is enough ? can I disable my SW firewall(s) ? (XP/TrendMicro)
    2) I cannot access my desktop from my laptop (ping to the desktop IP failes) :( , is it due to firewall settings or what ?

thats prolly due to personal / desktop firewall.

though you can disable your personal firewall, I wouldnt recommend it.

is your wireless client and your PC attached to the WRT54 ?
do they both have a valid IP adress ?

tried ping in both directions ?
    with deactivated personal firewall ?

can you ping them from the WRT54 ?

the wrt54 firewall is pretty decent, overall.
I had a clean, original win XP pro machine w/o any hotfixes on the net behind a wrt54 for 4-5 hours, with zero infections or w/e.
the mean time to infection for such a rig is like 30minutes, normally.

Just to update regarding the second question, I have managed to connect desktop to laptop and vice versa, I did the following:
    a) Enabled NetBios in both desktop and laptop
    b) Opened the subnet in the desktop firewall

Regarding the first question HW/SW firewall, I would prolly post a poll..
