WRT54G going at 11-12Mbps?

I have a WRT54G v.6 and a 54Mbps Wireless PC Car (TEW-421PC) ver. b1 by TRENDnet in the laptop. The laptop is in the same room as the router.

Initially, I saw that the signal strength = 4 or 5 bars
    and speed = 54Mbps
but then it gradually goes down to 11/12Mbps with 4-5bars

I don't know why it does that, is there a reason why that is?

I have another laptop, it has 802.11b wireless card, I used that laptop to set up the router, could that be a reason why the speed is at 11Mbps?

I've looked around the forum and found some, but the sites didn't work.
    any help would be appreciated,

    Thanks,
    Mike

Cordless phones, microwaves, neighbors wireless, wireless activity, static. There are numerous reasons for this to happen. I have a wireless bridge with the client 20 feet away. When one of my boys is on the XBOX, the other on the desktop, both wired to the client bridge and my wife is on her laptop across the room my signal drops to 28 - 36 most times. But never lose the quality enough to cause slowdowns or anything.
