just checking here to confirm that if i flash firmware to
WRT54G linksys factory firmware..the newest one available..
i thought i've read i was unable to use 3rd party firmware after..
is this true..or would i be able to reflash to firmware under 3M's 1st..then do the larger firmware..

    i'am having probs with:
    dd-wrt v23 final and v23 sp1
    WRT54G-tofu <--this for GL only?
..seem to have lots of internet reconnects..
    ..slow internet

also whats the safe overclocking speed for the:
    Broadcom BCM4712 chip rev 1
    ..mine defaults to 200M
what should i set it at for a stable speed?

You have to find out what version of the WRT54G you have. The v. 5 as far as I know does not have any 3rd party firmware because of it's low ram. you can find out which version you have by going here:
    and more info here:

As far as overclocking goes I don't know. I saw something on it here just forget where. Try a search. Hope this helps.

edit: be careful with the v.4 too. It can use 3rd party firmware, but you might have to flash to DDWRT Mini first then flash to whichever firmware you want.

Ok now pick a firmware when you are ready to flash with a new firmware. You must first reset you router. This clears the nvram gets out settings that will not work with your new firmware. Only flash your firmware through a wired connection. Do NOT flash wirelessly. When you have successfuly flashed to the new firmware reset the router again. Then you can put in your new settings. You have a G version which you can turn into a GS with the firmware. I use HyperWRT Thibor 14. It's a close to stock firmware with added features. DD WRT is another good firmware with a ton of features. There is a comparison chart on here:
Look around in the forums and see what you are looking for. If you signed up to these forums you can go to the download section and get what you want. If not you have to go to the firmwares site.
Not sure if you have to flash to DDWRT mini first before flashing to a different firmware. the G v. 2 says 4mb of flash and so does the v. 4 GS. check out the firmware specific forums and ask first. I think you have to sign up to post there. If you want to stick with the stock firmware (I Wouldn't) then you don't want the one for v. 5. It is vx works not linux and is different. The one you want I think is Firmware Version : v4.70.8.

    Thibor 14

    says on website:

"Before proceeding, please verify that your router is a Linksys WRT54GS v1, v2, v3, v4 (not v5), or a WRT54GL. This is not for the WRT54G, WRT54GX, etc."

so guess thats not a option for me..

    but my main question is:
can i use the stock linksys firmware..then in the future refalsh with a stable dd-wrt firmware..with no probs?

what website? HyperWRT Thibor is for GS and Tofu for G but now

"To clarify, I stopped because the code for both G and GS are almost the same now. GS firmware will work on a G hardware, and G firmware will work on a GS hardware. What prevents them from loading each other is just a simple signature check. If I continued with my HyperWRT version, then we are just going to be cloning each other's work... "...Tofu
    from this thread:
If you flash with Thibor a GS firmware to your G router, you will turn it into a GS router.

Someone has the same router as you and flashed from Tofu 13c then to Thibor 14 and worked. Had problems going straight from Thibor 14 not sure if he used v.4 or v.1-v.3 firmware. If you have problems. Let me know how you did.

So, for those of you following along from home, from STOCK firmware, here is the procedure for every WRT54G/GS/GL on the planet:

"G" up to V4 or "GL": -> Tofu -> Thibor (latest)
(note: WRT54G V1 is untested on Thibor).

"G" V5: -> nada, thank you for playing.

"GS" before V4: -> Thibor (latest)

    "GS" V4: -> Thibor GSV4 edition.

    "GS" V5: -> nothing, you're screwed.

    from here:

    sorry about that

For the WRT54G V5, all you need to do is unplug it, then push the reset button and plug it back in while the reset button is being pressed. This SHOULD put the router in "administrative mode", where the only thing running on the router is a TFTP server, waiting to accept a new firmware image.

Linksys has a TFTP client that should allow the firmware to be uploaded. There is also a TFTP client built into Windows XP, just type "TFTP -?" for syntax tips. Should be something like TFTP -i PUT <firmware image name>

Probably the only actual IMPROVEMENT they made in the V5's. ;)

at some points..stopped counting with the number of reflashing i tried
but was able to use IE..

    everything seems ok now..using Hyperwrt_GS_Thibor14.bin
put the clockspeed at 212 ..seems stable for the last 12hrs
