WRT54G or other router recommendations for Verizon FIOS?

I recently setup my WRT54G on my home LAN using cable modem with DD-WRT firmware and love the functionality. I use the VPN server to access my home network while at work and also use the SSH server for remote tunneling.

Today I signed up for Verizon FIOS which was launched last week in my area of town. The FIOS will be installed next week and in researching I've learned the WRT54G won't work well with DD-WRT firmware since the PPPoE required for the FIOS is CPU intensive (looks like my 15/2 FIOS will be limited with this setup on the WRT54G).

I've read that folks are using the WRT54G behind the Verizon provided D-Link Router. I'm wondering if that will allow all the same functionality to be used on the WRT54G (like the pptp VPN server, etc).

Otherwise are there any recommendations for a good home router that would support VPN, SSH, etc for my LAN and work well with the FIOS 15/2 service?

Thanks in advance for any help.
