WRT54G problem with Dish Hopper

I am a total NON-tech, with a WRT54G v6 (one firmware upgrade behind) router on a Windows XP computer system. We just had the Hopper with Sling installed in our home, but cannot use the SLING capabilities because of this router. They have told me it is a "recognized problem" with this specific router. They've given me things to try, pointing me to one of your tutorials on creating a "Quickvpn Connection for WRV54G/RV0xx Series routers" to use as a "guide" because there is nothing similar for the WRT54G. They've admitted that they are just trying things and that it's no guarantee it will work - I'm basically their lab rat - but that it's MY problem and they can't provide further assistance.
So, is anyone aware of a Dish Hopper issue with the WRT54G, and if so, has anyone come up with a work-around? Or do I just need to bite the bullet and upgrade this router? If so, which one is recommended?
