WRT54G router vs WAP54G access point

Planning to put wireless throughout a school with a Novell system. plan would be to put in as many WAP54G access points as needed hardwiring them all to our system. What about the WRT54G which is cheaper? Could it serve the same purpose, does it have the same power and same setup? The WAP54G we have is pretty much PnP.
Any ideas on antennae to increase range for difficult spots.
Anyone know how many laptops connected by wireless to an access point, would overload it.

each wireless access ppoint needs to be on a different channel that is not overlapping the next one to it. so no interference from two wireless cells which are overlapping.

set the channels to 1, 6, 11 like so.

WAP ot WRT's should both be ok, however the WRT's with a 3rd party firmware will give better reception and increased security as they support WPA2 encryption.

Do not use WRT54G version 5.0, since they do not have third party firmware support. The WAP54G has WPA2 with firmware versions 2.08 and higher. There is limited third party firmware with the WAP54G and it is more expensive than the WRT54G.
