WRT54G v.5 causing major slowdown...

For the last few years, I've used a Linksys BEFSR41 router for my home network, and it ran quite well. Last week, I replaced it with a Linksys WRT54G so I could have a little freedom (and enjoy my PSP's wireless features).

Problem is, there's a considerable slowdown using the WRT54G. Spent an hour with Comcast folks and an hour with Linksys folks, and they couldn't figure it out. We ran speed tests with the WRT, the BEF, and with no routing, and everytime it came out that the WRT was 1/2 the downstream speed of the BEF or an unrouted connection. So, obviously the router is the issue.

I can't return it to Best Buy 'cause I already sent the UPC in for a rebate, so, I'd like to know if there's any way to possible fix this problem. Remember, it's an issue with the speed of the WIRED connection.

    Thanks guys.

a have exactly the same Problem with my V.5
It reduces the download speed to about 50%!

    I cant believe that!

    Doesn't someone resolved this problem?

I've updated the Firmware to 1.00.2, but the problem is still here!

I've wrote to Linksys, if i know more i would let you know

    v5 speed

I thought i was losing my mind..i have the exact same problem and no one at Linksys can seem to help me..in fact they act like nothing is wrong. like the other guy i cut off the UPC so i cant get a refund. i did however manage to exchange my WRT54G v5 for another one but it does the same exact thing cuts my download speed by up to 50%.. hopefully they wil resolve this issuse

Ah, I'm not alone and found the appropiate topic.

I have the same problem. Not only about half the speed but also irregular speeds.

I can see that in my graph from Newsleecher. I just to have a solid line but now it's all over the place.

I'll return this piece of crap if they don't resolve this issue soon.

    WRT54v5 Slowdown

I'm having the same problem, I've tested mine with multiple routers. I have a bellsouth xtreme DSL connection with "3.0mb/s download and 384kb/s upload"
My tests were done using Broadbandreports.com speedtest.
My WRT54Gv5 gets around 500kb/s download and 313kb/s upload.
My D-Link DI-524 gets 2.8mb/s download and 313kb/s upload, but I can't use it because the D-Link router clashes with Xfire, and I need that for gaming.
My Belkin F5D7230 gets 2.8mb/s download and 313kb/s upload but I can use it because the dmz and virtual server functions are screwed up and I need those for my server.
My ZyXel P-330w gets 2.8mb/s download and 313kb/s upload, but I don't really want to trust it with my network stability and security because it was $4.99 at CompUSA.

If anyone finds away to fix the linksys routers I would be very appreciative, as my numbers show that the problem is most definately from the linksys router. And its really sad I paid the most for the one that runs the slowest.

    Went back

I just went back and returned my WRT54G at Bestbuy and told them I had got the wrong model number and they seemed nice enough. I proceeded to pay $20 more and get the WRT54GS and shes running great! Granted I hadn't sent in my mail-in rebates yet, so for those of you with out UPCs :-(. So for anyone's intrest the current WRT54Gv4 still runs like the old Linksys boxes :)

    I got a reply from Linksys.nl.

They send me new firmware and the browsing seems better. I have to do some further testing.

The guy pointed me to the different support sites for Linksys. None of them have this firmware so far I could see... Fools...

    Anyway, here it is, enjoy!

This is for the European version.

Same problem here with my cable connection. I plan on returning the router tomorrow and exchanging for another version if they have it. If not I'll just get a Netgear. My old Netgear FVS318 blows this v5 away speedwise.

Did you try the new firmware I posted?

It does improve, but it's not up to par yet.

This is nuts. I bought a WRT54G from newegg, who do not accept returns on this router, and it is junk  . Various speed test were pegging me at 9kbps. Thats right, slower than a 28.8 modem. I have since yanked the device and put my tried and true BEFW11S4 back in place, which is a consistent 2950 kbps. Beside the newer bin file that is posted in this thread, are there any suggestions?

Newegg is usually pretty good with returns, why won't they accept the return?
