Before upgrading the firmware make sure that the firmware you use is compatable.

The latest HyperWRT firmware or the Latest official linksys firmwares are the only two firmwares that are compatable with YOUR WRT54G v2.2 and WRT54GS v1.1.

this is due to different chipsets being used.

DO NOT FLASH WITH ANY OTHER FIRMWARE YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

    HyperWRT v2.1b1 for WRT54G or WRT54GS

    or

    Linksys 3.03.6 WRT54G or 3.37.6 WRT54GS
  2. PacoSS

    PacoSS LI Guru Member

The new v2.2 hardware has changed the ethernet chip. Now it's a real 100mbit switcher, older versions are 34mbit really.

So if you flash with an older firware you'll get without WAN & LAN connection, only wireless access is possible.
So you must re-flash it again with original Linksys, HyperWRT 2.0b4 or Alchemy 6.0rcX via Wireless. This is a dangerous way to do it.

    You have been warned. :!:

    Ru Sane? all versions work....not!!

Alchemy pre 5_4a made a brick out of my WRT54G 2.2 this morning
Luckily I was within my return policy from comp and exchanged it
found a 2.0 version on the shelf so I took version 2.0 over 2.2

    Good Idea or bad idea?

    WRT54GS Hardware Version

May sound like a foolish question, but how do you tell whether your GS hardware is version 1.1 or 2.2? I've looked all through the option pages in my firmware version (3.37.2) and the outside of by router, but cannot find any reference to the hardware version.

Whatever. Linksys "original" has bugs. Yes, you read that right. Proof: they release new versions. Why? For the hell of it? No, but to sqaush bugs.

I'd rather have the added features of the alternate GPL released firmwares like Alchemy or DD-WRT (v21+).

that is correct however some QoS and VLAN capabilities are now lost. The BCM5325E is a less capable chip than the ADM6996, though it maybe a faster chipset.

    hello:

i have just purchased a new wrtg54 which i would like to run tinypeap on. this thread has me concerned/confused. i would assume (although i will verify) that this box has the newest chipset and firmware (v2.2?).

    1) is there an issue with using this box with tinypeap?
    2) which version of firmware should i use on this box to prepare to use tinypeap?

    3) can i download and use the wrt54g Beta2 Firmware update from the tinypeap.com site?

    4) what are the benefits/issues with the new wrtg54? am i better servered to go with the new model i just purchased or finiding a used one?

afaik there is an issue with this router. since TinyPEAP is based on the Sveasoft Satori firmware which doesn't support V3.0 of the WRT54G.

the TinyPEAP author has already stated:

NOTE: This firmware will not work on WRT54G v2.2 or WRT54GS v1.1

since the v2.2 is lower than v3.0 it wont support that either.

well tinypeap is intergrated into a firmware already. though the Brian has commented on possibly using HyperWRT for the next version of TinyPEAP which i think on looking at the user votes on the most used firmware would be quite a nice feature, especially if Static DHCP could also be added.

the benefits of the newer Broadcom chipset.

The BCM5325EKQM Chip has a weaker VLAN and QoS capabilities than the ADM6996 Chipset, thought he BCM is faster and throughput near 100 Mbps whereas the the ADM6996 has a maximum of 35 Mbps when VLAN's are used.

I suppose until Broadcom/linksys release a new driver for this chipset which helps the problem, you are limited to what firmwares you can use.

HyperWRT 2.1b1 and Linksys 3/03.6 are the recommended ones so far.

    WRT54G v3 Firmware upgrade to DD-WRTv22prefinal3.1

I've looked all over and couldn't find a firm answer on whether or not other firmwares work for version 3. So i went ahead and tried DD-WRTv22prefinal3.1 and so far so good! No brick here =) I haven't tested all the functions though.

    Got the fw from here:

    http://dd-wrt.com/

Check out the RFlow Collector too... it is perfect for what I'm doing:

Networking/Internet Sharing between 3 apartments. 4 wired, 8 wireless. I've only got one wrt54g, with a dlink repeater (in AP mode) attached. I'll look into getting another and pull a WDS. Anyway, I've just always been curious on the bandwidth distribution/usage of each client, and whether or not strangers are connecting to my network. So DD-WRT + RFlow Collector is perfect.

That isn't true.. I have used an incorrect (means: older Firmware-version of wifibox) firmware, and now only the wireless is working correctly. It seems that the Linksys is configured as a bridge-router, because the laptop (with LAN&wireless) gets an internal ip from the router (192.168.*) and external ip from my provider (82.197.*). The pc (wired) gets only an external ip.

Hope i can fix it tonight, when i'm coming home ;)

Hi, I have recently bought a WRT54GS with s/n: CGN30E... and it seems to have hardware version 2.0, from the Sysinfo.htm file.

I've installed HyperWRT 2.1b1 firmware. Everything is fine, except I'm not satisfied with the QOS feature for my VOIP. I've tried using port-priority and mac-priority, and both don't work well, people complain about my voice being choppy when I have BitTorrent using up a good portion of my upload stream.

I'm thinking about trying out DD-WRT as it seem to have better QOS support, but now I'm hesitant after reading this thread. Has anything changed since 1/31, the creation date of this thread? Will DD-WRT work on my router?

    Edit:
Well, I saw this other thread firmware and hardware compatibility and it showed all the concerns I had. Anyway, I installed the DD-WRT firmware and now I think I can actually see QOS being working as I can see that my BitTorrent traffic goes down when my VOIP is in use, plus it allows me to assign static dhcp address to specific mac addresses. That's all I needed... I'm glad I changed.

if you read the bottom it says.

serial numbers only. my GS is a v1.0 though says hardware version 2.0 in sysinfo.htm :)

The problem with most firmwares at present, is they have limited support for the new chipset. there are afaik new drivers in the linksys beta firmware however QoS maybe limited some what

until source code is released for the new v4.x firmware we wont have full support for the chipsets i guess.

    WRT54G HW 2.2

    Hi !

    I have a WRT54G (54MBit) Hardware Version 2.2 and i have flashed
the OpenWRT Firmware from the WRT54GS (108MBit).

It is working now as a "normal" WLAN-Router with a lot of
    extra functions. (e.g. adjustable Power).

But the main functionality i wanted to test (the ClientMode)
    has gone. :-(

So i wanted to flash it back to the Linksys-Firmware, but
there seems to be no normal way to do this. :-(

I also found some HOWTOs in the NET that say, i should
activate the "BootWait" function and flash it via TFTP.
But also this button has gone. even more :-(

Is there an other way to force the router to take the
"G"-Firmware, or do i have to live with that now ?

    Thx in advance,
    Sigi
