WRT54G v3.0 OK to buy? - BestBuy WRT54G/GS Sale This Week

Best Buy is having a decent sale on the WRT54G/GS routers this week, so I stopped buy and was hoping to find a WRT54G router but all they had were v3.0's except for one v2.2 (which I heard was bad), so I picked up a v3.0. I was tempted to pickup a v2.0 GS but I've also heard bad things about them.

So, did I do the right thing by buying the v3.0? Can I use HyperWRT with it? Are there any known issues or problems with the v3.0?

    Thanks in advance...

    what did this post mean?

    kidding about what?

i just picked up a GS 2.0 today myself at Best Buy. $30 rebate seems nice.

should i have got the G 3.0 instead??

Can someone knowledgeable please give us your opinion? I also had the choice of versions 2.0, 2.2 and 3.0 at my local Best Buy. I bought the 2.0 since it was the last 2.0 there, but haven't opened it yet. Is there any benefit whatsoever to go with 2.2 and newer? There just appears to be many problems with them, after reading this forum. OTOH, the new beta firmware seems to fix all of them...

afik the 3.0 is hard to fit with third party firmware. and it has an extra button that is on the board that as of yet does nothing.
i would go with a first gen GS or a Gv2.0 they seem to be the most stable longest lasting and easiest to mod the firmware.

the 3.0 more than likely has the standard wrt54g ram and flash while the GS model will have 2 times not that you will need the extra, but its just nice to know its there.

if its an unbeatable price and you dont care about firmware right now get it.
in the future im sure there will be more firmware out there but as of now its difficult at best.

I have two WRT54G v2.0's and they're great. I just did the memory mod on the one I took to college so now it has the same amount of memory available as a GS (32MB).

Thanks for your replies, guys. I think v2.0 is going to be more stable all around and should be kept.

There's a special deal on FatWallet where you can get a WRT54G for $17 plus tax! You have to pricematch a Radio Shack flyer with Circuit City and wait for the rebates. Rebate offers end Apr 30.

come on not at all??? im sad now i have nothing better to do.
i mean cant i stick 512MB of pc3200 in it and call it good???

my netopia routers have 2 slots for ram in them i just have to find some old sticks to drop in (simms not dimms)

i just wanted to see it not actually do it...

i still dont know how and i really dont want to, this post has been brought to you by a wrt54g which for the most part has been unmolested and will stay mostly that way

lol the helm. its not the starship enterprise, yet...

i would just like to see it done so that i can laugh at the dude for needing 32MB ram. im happy with my 16.
actually may be nice if you needed a bunch of clients to connect at the same time but then im sure you would need more processorwhy not aslap a PIII 1GHz in there...

again the netopias have 33MHz procs in them and thats 6x slower than the wrt54g

so im not sure i would need the extra.

Yeah, you definitely can't add more memory. However, if you read the information regarding the 32MB mod, it's simple enough to tell whether or not your router will do it. Just don't make any typos when inputting the commands. That could be problematic ;)

Interestingly I did notice that the mod seemed to have undone itself after I did a long reset while unplugged (I just had to re-do it). I'm sure you've tried that though.
