WRT54g v3.1 vs. v4

Hi. I'm quite confused about which of these versions is "better". It is my understanding that v3 can be better for WDS due to its components not being integrated but v4 has a stronger radio unit. Why is v4 "harder" to load firmware? It is because of having to load the mini dd-wrt firmware first? Is the difficulty in firmware loading only when dealing with Thibor's firmware? Is there anything else about its firmware that's harder to load? Also, according to dd-wrt, afterburner can be enabled on all pre-v5 models. Can afterburner be enabled when using HyperWRT on v3.1 or using Tofu?

According to previous posts, v4 is not the one to use if I want to play with lots of firmwares. Is that statement relative to classic "GS", "G", or both?

I will be running the WRT54G using stock antennas, at least for the forseeable future. I may turn a few of them into APs using WDS. I will also have other non-AP clients as well. Lastly, for WDS, is the maximum total # of routers 4 (1 router+3 APs) or is it 5 (1 router+4 APs).
