    Ok, Here we go....

Got a new WRT54G on 10/11/2005 from buy.com. Turns out it's a new version. (Version 5) with a firmware of v1.0.00 dated August 18, 2005. Tried flashing with dd-wrt v.23 and also FreemanBasic with no luck on either. Also have issues with severe bottleneck when downloading large files. Contacted Linksys online chat support to get the bottleneck solved and they wasted time by messing with the MTU settings. Reset to factory defaults made more changes. After 4 or 5 resets the router finally gave up. Bricked it bad. Flashng Power LED and can't ping it.

I attemped to reflash with the Linksys Firmware Update utility but it was futile due to lack of ping. I also attempted to jump pins 15 and 16 on the nvram chip but that didn't work either. I also tried pins 16 and 17 based on what someone else tried on a v4 router. I looked into the JTAG option but first, noticed that the pins for JP1 and JP2 are no longer there and second, I really dont have the patience to sit and make the cable. I know. that's just being lazy, but what the hell. I leanrned a lot for 50 bucks. It seems like Linksys removed the previous ways of recovery in v5.. I was also informed that v5 has much less memory. I believe 2 meg nvram and 8 ram...

if you had read the firmwares readme's you would have known none support the V5 WRT54G in the first place. get it exchanged or use the RMA to get a new one.

and hope it is not a v5 :)

the tftp trick should still work. but since it has only a 2mb flash, the pins should be different too

I always read the readme's. i figured id try anyway and see what would happen. besides, the router blew up from the built in reset factory default feature. Not the third party firmware flashing. RMA is no good because once you crack it open you void the warranty because you destroy the seal.

I was hoping the tftp trick worked but no good. The device no longer responds to ping requests. That's why i attempted to jump the pins.

    well I RMA'd an opened WRT54G ok.

as for the pins, since this is new hardware and firmware you are delving into unchartered waters. guessing this will do or not will get you nowhere except to totally destory your WRT54G and is not recommended.

I cannot for the life of me see how resetting to factory defaults trashed your router, and even if it did, then you are entitled to a new replacement.

Never had this problem with any other router from them. It seemed to have some issues out of the box. I figured what the hell, I'd mess around anyway and see what I could learn.

    Thanks
