WRT54G v5 loses / corrupts WAN settings?

My in-laws just got a WRT54Gv5, and it sets up and connects two computers just fine, but within 15 or so minutes they lose internet access. On the router's admin page I can see that the static WAN IP info I input has been replaced with a local address (192.168.0.104 I think), the gateway and DNS servers have been set to 0.0.0.0, and the subnet mask is wrong.

So I set it all back to what it should be, and apply the settings, but the router doesn't give me the success page and then stops responding. Power cycle, re-enter correct settings, it works, then fails within 15 minutes or so again.

Any ideas? The firmware has been updated to the latest 1.00.6, and I've reset to factory defaults. I know the v5s suck, but they should at least work for the average home user.
