WRT54G V5 Support Questions

    I recently bought a WRT54G from my local Wal-Mart.

First, the Rev 5/6's are NOT marked on the Linksys Box's anymore (I looked for a good 30 mins trying to find the difference between Revs) So the only way to be sure to get the Rev4 or better is to do the whole buy/return thing.

I installed the router in place of my BEFVP41, on the linksys firmware its pretty stable. I was pushing 8Mb/s through the wan and 54Mb/s from the WiFi to the Lan and from the LAN to LAN about 34Mbs/s ( Myth is a wonderful thing ). Stayed like that for about 6 hours before i decided to load up WRT-DD on the 54G. I installed the Micro ( only version available I think ) and I get the same results. Very stable Firmware for opensource. ( Yes I'm lovin it so far)

well here are my very simple questions :)

I would like to see a list of modules that are in the Micro Firmware and their Respective Size that goes into Flash.

Is there a firmware Builder Ap out there that one can use to Customize the firmware to their tailored needs? I really need SNMP, IP/Sec VPN server, Better Firewall Management ( I would like to Create Firewall Rules based off VLAN Id's and what not ), and remove Telnet for SSH.

I know 2 Megs is not alot for Flash, but if you can take out some of the crap that I wont be using, I think I should be able to fit in the things I really need that router for ( to replace my Dead Pix ).

Or, should I just return the router, and get a Ver3/4 or go for the GS model and do the Memory Hack on it? (I think that only Ver5/6 of both G and GS are available locally)

anyway, just looking for quick answers.

there is no "firmware builder" application. are you familiar to linux? you will need to compile the source code and thats it. As to an IPSec VPN Server? The cpu is not that good even for a WRT54Gv1-v4 or GL. DD-WRT has added a PPTP server but if you want IPSec Tunneling then go for a specific VPN Router.

but to be honest you seem to miss your PIX. perhaps you should source a second hand PIX?

My PIX's Main board Fried. And Cisco won't replace it ( I'm a CCIE, kinda pisses me off that they won't do this favor for me ). So for my SOHO project, I'm not using any Cisco Equipment.

As for the PPTP server, thats not available in the Micro Code, is it?

    yea, I'm familiar with Linux, compiling/source code...etc.

so the modules are all just compiled together, there isn't anything special about it ( sorry, havnt looked into the source code of this project just yet )

Is there a Test Bed available to test Beta Builds on, with out having the chance to Brick the router?

best to look on the ddwrt wiki pages for more help on compiling. http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

the v5/v6 are VERY limited, however the WRT54GL version will allow you to install IPKG packages.

If you wanting to compile you own stuff you may also want to look at www.openwrt.org since they were the main founders of the WRT flexibility.
