WRT54G v8 and DD-WRT Possible?

I'm new to this dd-wrt thing, and purchased a WRT54G router specifically for an article that I read about being able to update the firmware, and turn it into a linux router. I'm working on another project for voip, so this was going to be another cog in the mesh, in hopes to get something nice going.

Low and behold, I am finding that my router is a v8, and I have yet to see anyone post a successful project of firmware upgrades with this particular version, and those that have tried, get the "Upgrade failed" page (I forget exactly what it says, but I got it too).

Has anyone come across this situation and seen it successfully upgraded with dd-wrt, or is that not possible?

I read somewhere that the chip on the newer models (v7 and up) uses something other than broadcom, and therefor may not be possible to upgrade.

Thank you in advance for any posts that may be of help.
