After two D-Link wireless routers died I bought the WRT54G V8 . The firmware has been updated to 800.2. Did I make a mistake? I notice that it is recommended that you buy WRT54GL. Why is that.

You didnt make a mistake in so many words, just depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to play with and run 3rd party software then yes get a GL if you just want it for simple network access then you should be fine with what you have.

What do you mean by third party software. Thank you for the reply.

If you read postings under forums > firmware projects for linksys devices you will find more then enough information to keep you busy for a while. But basically 3rd party firmware / software is software that was changed or created by the open and rarely the closed source community.

So what you are talking about is reprogramming the router using a third party program. Is the purpose of this to speed up the data transmittal or what?

WRT54G v8 is good but third party firmware hasen't yet adapted to that version

And what if someday you want to increase the power of your router (you want the signal reach top of the house or the basement) ? You can do that (and many more) with another (3-rd party) firmware (by increasing power) or with another (high-gain) antenna. But your v.8.0 WRT54G doesn't have these options: it has 2 MB of flash-memory (instead of 4 MB) and has a non-detacheable antenna. At aprox. same price you could get a WRT54GL (that is a winner). That's is all about.

My main concerns are security ,stability, and download speed. My range with the V8 is fine. In fact right now it is wireless data transfer speed. It's not bad, but I would like it faster.
